Grammar: Present Perfect - For & Since

Helli guys!

In this post I am going to explain the difference between for and since

For and since are two particles that most of the times we'll find them in a perfect tense, such as the Present Perfect, Present Perfect Continuous, Past Perfect or Past Perfect Continuous. Both are use to express a period of time. 

When do we have to use FOR?

For is used to express a period of time, for instance two weeks, one year, a couple of months...

Have a look at the following example: 


  • I have learnt English for twelve years. 
With this sentence what we want to express is that I started learning English in 2007 and I continue studying English now. 


When do we have to use SINCE?

Since is used to express the exact moment when an action started. 

  • I have learnt English since 2007
